What is SSC CGL?
The Staff Selection Commission Combined Graduate Level (SSC CGL) examination is one of India's most competitive and prestigious government recruitment exams. Conducted by the Staff Selection Commission, SSC CGL selects candidates for Group B and Group C posts across various ministries, departments and organizations of the Government of India.
Every year, more than 30 lakh candidates register for SSC CGL, competing for approximately 10,000โ15,000 vacancies. The exam is conducted in multiple tiers, testing candidates on quantitative aptitude, reasoning, English language and general awareness.

1. Quantitative Aptitude
This is one of the most scoring sections if prepared well. Key topics include:
- Number System: LCM, HCF, divisibility rules, factors, remainders
- Algebra: Linear and quadratic equations, identities
- Geometry: Triangles, circles, polygons โ properties and theorems
- Trigonometry: Basic ratios, identities, height and distance
- Mensuration: Area, volume and perimeter of 2D and 3D shapes
- Data Interpretation: Bar graphs, pie charts, line graphs, tables
- Percentage, Profit-Loss, Simple & Compound Interest, Time-Work, Speed-Distance
2. General Intelligence and Reasoning
The reasoning section tests logical and analytical thinking. Important topics are:

- Analogy โ Semantic and figurative
- Classification and Coding-Decoding
- Blood Relations, Directions, Ranking
- Syllogism, Statement-Conclusion, Statement-Assumptions

3. English Language and Comprehension
English tests both grammar knowledge and comprehension skills. Focus areas:

- Spotting Errors โ identifying grammatical mistakes
- Sentence Improvement and Para Jumbles

Month-wise Study Plan
Month 1โ2: Build the Foundation
Start with NCERT Mathematics (Class 8โ10) to strengthen your basic concepts in arithmetic, algebra and geometry. For English, revise basic grammar rules and start reading editorials in The Hindu or The Indian Express. For General Awareness, start reading a daily newspaper and note down important events.
Month 3โ4: Standard Books
Move to standard preparation books (see recommended list below). Spend 2โ3 hours on Quantitative Aptitude, 1โ2 hours on Reasoning, 1 hour on English and 1 hour on General Awareness daily. Solve at least 50 practice questions per subject per day.
Month 5โ6: Mock Tests and Analysis
Start taking full-length mock tests. Take one complete mock test every day or every alternate day. After each test, spend time analyzing mistakes โ this is more important than the test itself. Maintain an error log and revise those topics.
